Welcome to the world of Sunlight Falls

In January 2012, Khris Soden convinced a group of friends to play D&D, starting with the the Safe Words games. Khris wrote these games with a specific narrative and they were arranged into a “Season 1” and "Season 2". After these initial games, the original line-up of players changed and Khris transitioned to other games, introducing the Pick-Up Games, which started as one- or two-episode games with a loose ongoing story structure. These mostly involved the Lents Irregulars and evolved into an ongoing narrative centered around the town of Lents.

In 2017, Khris introduced the Explorer’s Club games, which were geared for newer players but also helped transition the players from playing D&D 3.5 edition to the 5th edition of the game.

In 2018, we played our first campaign, Shrine of the Coyote. This campaign was written by Khris and lasted for either five or six games.

In 2019, we played our first D&D published campaign, Curse of Strahd. Khris modified a lot of the module as written, including changing the Vistani into the Visitani. Many other problematic aspects of the game were left in.

In 2020, while staying at home during the pandemic, we began our first online campaign, Descent Into Avernus. Descent Into Avernus is another D&D published campaign, and has been played with only minor cosmetic changes. In April of 2021, the first "in-person" Descent Into Avernus game was held in Katy Asher's backyard.

In 2021, we began occasionally playing Dungeon of the Mad Mage as an online-only game. Like Descent Into Avernus, the Dungeon of the Mad Mage games follows the published material closely.

A Brief History of the Sunlight Falls setting

The Sunlight Falls calendar is based off of the first appearance of the holy light at Sunlight Falls, with year 1 marking the first year anniversary of the appearance of the light. Our D&D games started in year 317, and the current games are set in year 324. Some of the major events of recent Sunlight Falls history follow:

  • Year 317: Councilwoman Elspeth Smith kills or drives out her other council members and declares herself the Woman King of Sunlight Falls.
  • Year 317: The town of Powell's Camp is renamed as Lents in honor of the farmer that saved it from eminent destruction by the nearby Elven community of Yllodah.
  • Year 318: The Woman King Elspeth Smith makes her first attempt an annexing the town of Lents as part of Sunlight Falls.
  • Year 321: The Wizard Harold Steele dies and becomes a lich.
  • Year 321: After becoming a lich, the Wizard Harold Steele creates a tower underneath his house, displacing a Dwarven waypoint station.
  • Year 322: The dwarves displaced by Wizard Harold Steele collapse his tower, but his home remains floating above Lents.
  • Year 322: A calamity in the fall or winter of the year happens to the nearby town of Cheater's Holler, leading to the death of most of its populace. The destruction is so thorough that outsiders won't discover the horrors until the next spring.
  • Year 322: The Safe Words, and adventuring group that had started five years prior, formally disbands.
  • Year 323: Sunlight Falls, under the control of Woman King Elspeth Smith decides to conquer and assimilate all nearby towns. Town guards and adventurers are conscripted, but the effort is proved futile by the encroaching advance of a gnoll army.
  • Year 323: The Gnoll Wars. Gnol from East of the Dragonsteeth Mountains had advanced in the Fertile Valley far enough to threaten Sunlight Falls. A group of heroes travelled across the Dragonsteeth and neutralized the threat.
