The Return to the Blog

Originally posted on February 15th, 2009

I accidentally killed the Wordpress blog format of this website about a year and a half ago. I wasn't particularly sad about it; the format made it way too easy to post whatever inanity was circling though my brain at whatever hour of the day it was (and frankly, that time of the day was usually too late and too many drinks into the night). I dealt with it by mustering my meager coding skillz and assembling a new website by hand. Yes, I'm old.

The new old-school format works decently. I like how it looks. Unfortunately, it's a phenomenal pain in the ass to update, not to mention completely antiquated and inefficient. After a month or two of adding some content and restoring old content, I left it to langour (this is the first update to the site in almost six months). I felt myself needing something a little more immediate, a little more visceral and responsive.

I created a Blogger blog. I didn't go it for myself, but rather, as a prerequisite for contributing to a friend's blog (I never have contributed anything to it). A couple of months ago, I started posting a few things on the one I'd created. Anyway, I've posted enough things to it that I may as well give out the address. It can be found at: http://khrissoden.blogspot.com.

I've got mixed feeling about this whole business. On one hand, I finally learned about the use of RSS feeds (did I mention that I'm a throwback to the 20th century?), and this website sure doesn't take advantage of that technology. That you can subscribe to my blog is a plus. There also exists the ease of use for me, another plus. Of course, that ease of use is also a downside in my eyes, since I like to avoid the immediacy and casualness a blog confers/implies. I also have concerns about letting a large corporation host my published thoughts. I'm a little conflicted about having it, but it exists and I've just given the address, so there it all is.

I'm still planning on updating this website, but I'll probably post stuff on the blog first, and then migrate the most worthwhile posts here. Random illustrations will go up on the blog, with keepers finding a home here. Major comics will appear here first, as well as any research that involves heavy data. Casual "insights" will not make it over this way. Theoretically, I'll Web 2.0 this site someday, but don't hold your breath...
