The Portland Tour of Tilburg/The Tilburg Tour of Portland
Posted on 07/05/2008 This September, I am conducting two joint projects: the Portland Tour of Tilburg, and the Tilburg Tour of Portland. As the names imply, I will be giving tours of one city in the opposite city. I've developed super-imposed maps of one city over the other city in order to develop a common walking route through both. In each city, I will conduct the tour through those city streets, while discussing and pointing out the features of the other city. The mapping portion of the project was done in a pain-staking (and probably very inefficient) manner: first every street corner or bend in the road was recorded by its exact latitude and longitude, then plotted using a combination of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat. This allowed me to have two maps that are in the exact same scale that I can overlay, and has the very important advantage of being under no copyright. The walking route itself in each of the towns follow the same circuit, although for practical reasons they are not exactly the precise routes: the geometric plan of Portland and the European curves of Tilburg streets don't allow exact match-ups, so if the true path was to be followed our tour group would have to be walking through buildings and such. Below, you can see the tour routes. If you'd like to get a closer look at it, download the PDF version.
The Portland Tour of Tilburg Map [pdf] Now I woudn't be much of a tour guide if I didn't try to sell the audience some souvenirs, so that's why I've made some postcards. Both designs will be available on either tour, with the difference that depending on which tour you attend, the back will read "A Souvenir of The Portland Tour of Tilburg by Khris Soden" or "A Souvenir of The Tilburg Tour of Portland by Khris Soden". The postcards sell for $1 in Portland, and 1 Euro in Tilburg. The postcards will only be available on the tour.
